Chapter Fourteen

When a person had important questions, it was always best to go straight to the most informed source for answers. In Snowberry Creek, that meant her closest friends from the quilting guild. They didn’t have a board meeting scheduled, but the three of them could be bribed into showing up at her house if Abby promised them tea and dessert. As usual, Glenda acted as the self-appointed chauffeur for the group, picking up Jean and Louise on her way to Abby’s house.

Abby met them at the front door. “Welcome, ladies. I appreciate your coming on short notice.”

Glenda gave her a long look. “Well, you did say it was important.”

“Yes, I did, and I promise it is.”

The three of them filed past her and headed straight for the dining room table, where she’d already set out beverages and a plate piled high with lemon bars and the cream cheese spritz cookies that Jean was particularly fond of. Abby waited until everyone was settled with a cup of tea and cookies in hand before explaining why she’d called them together. “You’re no doubt wondering why you’re here.”

Louise spoke first. “We’re assuming it has something to do with why Tripp is sitting in jail.”

Abby hadn’t been sure any of them knew where he was. Regardless of what they thought about that, it would make it easier to explain why she was so interested in any information they could share about Ronald Minter or anything else that might prove useful.

But where to start? Maybe at the beginning.

“As you know, Glenda and I made a trip out to Mr. Minter’s farm to pick up some pumpkins. When I went looking for him, I found his body in the middle of the corn maze.”

They all clucked in sympathy, and Jean reached out to pat her hand. “We know how horrible that must have been for you, Abby, especially coming so soon after finding dear Dolly’s body in your backyard.”

Yeah, it had been tough, but she had to get past that awful moment if she was going to help Tripp and his friend. “The detective from the county sheriff’s office is in charge of the case. Right now, he seems to think his most viable suspect is Sergeant Kevin Montgomery. He’s that homeless veteran we see around town sometimes.”

It was Louise who spoke next. “I’ve actually met him. Sort of, anyway. I was loading groceries into my trunk in the pouring rain when I dropped one of my canvas bags. Oranges and apples went rolling everywhere right as Sergeant Montgomery happened to be walking by. He immediately took the bag from me and started gathering up all of my things for me. He said there was no reason for both of us to get wet and that I should wait in the car. After he picked up everything, he put the bag in the trunk with the others, shut the lid, and then walked away. He wouldn’t even let me buy him a cup of coffee or anything, even though I offered.
